TIRE
THE HIDDEN SUMMER RISK ACROSS EUROPE
The Tire Magazine | Summer Insight
As holidaymakers flood the roads of Southern Europe, there’s a less visible risk simmering beneath the tyres: extreme road surface temperatures. While air temperatures across the continent hover between 30–40°C in summer peaks, asphalt can easily reach 55–65°C, dramatically affecting tyre performance and safety.

What Happens to Tyres in Extreme Heat?
Tyres are thermally reactive. In high temperatures, they undergo structural and pressure changes that may lead to:
- Increased air pressure, risking overinflation
- Structural deformation of the casing
- Tread softening, cracking, or chunking
- Reduced grip and extended braking distance
This is especially critical for high-speed motorway driving or when vehicles are heavily loaded — such as family cars packed for holidays or vans in commercial use.
The Heat–Pressure Equation
For every 10°C rise in ambient temperature, tyre pressure increases by approximately 0.1 bar (1.5 psi). In the hot southern stretches of Europe — Spain, Italy, Greece, southern France — this can result in dangerously overinflated tyres if not checked and adjusted properly.
- Case in point:
- A vehicle calibrated for 2.4 bar at 20°C could be running close to 2.7 bar after a few hours of hot motorway driving — enough to affect handling and wear.
EU-Wide Summer Checklist for Tyre Safety
Whether you’re managing a fleet or planning a cross-border holiday road trip, these basic practices make all the difference:
- Check pressure early in the morning, before the tyres heat up
- Never exceed manufacturer pressure guidelines — adjust for load, not for assumptions
- Inspect sidewalls for cracks, bulges, or heat-related softening
- Choose the right seasonal compound: All-seasons are not ideal for +35°C conditions
Europe’s Heat Map: A Road Risk Perspective
Recent EU climate reports highlight increasing frequency of heatwaves, especially in Mediterranean regions. These trends should influence tyre selection, fleet policies, and public awareness efforts.
We recommend tyre professionals and retailers to educate consumers about the risks of neglecting tyre checks during summer months — especially when crossing climate zones within Europe.
Heat may feel like a holiday to drivers, but for tyres, it’s peak stress season.
Smart driving starts with smart preparation — and tyres are the first line of safety on a scorching road.
